If you have ever set foot in an archaeological museum, you have seen them. Obsidian tools: identical, and dull. In every museum on earth. But the finds from Tekli Tepe Höyük in the Van Museum make a person stop.
Look at the photograph. In the centre, a block of obsidian—where it all began. Not an abstraction, not an art object: raw material. Stone. But stone that shines like black ice and glitters as though it remembered its volcanic birthplace.
And beneath it, a genuinely rare specimen: an obsidian tool with an orange-brown bloom, very nearly a tiger’s eye. Not paint, not glaze—simply obsidian that had the luck to be born in the right geochemistry.
Three errors in a single word
Before we go any further, the name.
Obsidian comes to us from Pliny, and it comes wrong. The Latin obsidianus is a scribal slip for Obsianus lapis, “the stone of Obsius”—a Roman who, Pliny reports, found the material in Ethiopia. Later editors restored the correct reading; the misprint had already left the building and was not coming back.
So the mineral is named after a man whose name we have very probably got wrong. Whose existence rests on a single passage in Book 36 of the Natural History and on nothing else whatever. And who found his stone in a country that is not, by any stretch, the main source of it.
Three mistakes, stacked, and all three still in every geology textbook in print.
The oldest map we have
Now the part that changes what you are looking at.
Every volcano’s obsidian carries its own chemical signature—a particular blend of trace elements laid down when the lava cooled. Which means a single flake, anywhere, can be matched to the mountain it came from. Not “somewhere in Anatolia”: that mountain.
And the mountains of eastern Anatolia were in the business. Bingöl and Nemrut—the latter a volcano standing on the western shore of this very lake—supplied obsidian that turns up hundreds of kilometres away, in Mesopotamia and the Levant.
(A word on Nemrut, since there are two and the wrong one is famous. The celebrated Nemrut, the one with the colossal stone heads and the self-promoting king, is Nemrut Dağı in Adıyaman, five hundred kilometres west. This Nemrut is a live volcano beside Lake Van, and it is the one that actually made things.)
So these interchangeable little blades are the oldest surviving map of human contact. Trade routes reconstructed from glass, thousands of years before anybody thought of writing anything down. A man in the Levant held a stone that had come from a mountain he would never see, passed hand to hand across a distance nobody in that chain had travelled entire.
The Chalcolithic, and the first mirrors
The Chalcolithic—the copper age—is the transitional epoch between stone and bronze, when man had discovered copper but had not yet given up stone. In that partnership obsidian was the leading man: extraordinarily sharp, obligingly predictable when struck, and brilliant in sunlight.
It was not only a tool. Polish a slab of it and you have a mirror—the first mirrors anyone had. Çatalhöyük produced a whole series of them, ground and polished into shallow discs and buried with their owners. Before obsidian, a person could see their own face only in still water. Afterwards, they could carry it about.
So yes—there is a great deal of this black stone in museums. But now and then it flashes in such a way that all of it—the millennia, the scholarship, the glass case—stops being an obstacle. And you simply stand and look, spellbound, as though for the first time.
Only now you know what you are looking at: a mirror, a road, and a printer’s error.
