Shortly before we set off for Serbia, an acquaintance of ours hurriedly posted photographs of the magnolias in flower in Belgrade—driven, one gathers, by the dread of being the last person on earth to do so this season.
The irony was not lost on us. From Thursday onwards Belgrade presented us with blossom in every direction: cherry, pear, apple and a great many others besides. Of magnolia there was not a petal. Our first flowering magnolia of the year we finally ran to earth in Novi Sad.
I could hardly keep such things to myself. Enjoy.
